Ground Wire (Equipment Ground)
The bare or green wire that carries no current in normal use. It exists for the failure moment: giving fault current a fast path back so the breaker trips before a metal case can shock someone.
Every grounded circuit drags along a conductor that does nothing all day. Its entire purpose is the moment a hot wire touches something it should not, like the metal frame of a dryer: the ground wire turns that silent hazard into a dead short, current spikes, and the breaker opens in a fraction of a second. No ground path means the frame just sits there energized, waiting for a hand.
That is the real meaning of the third prong, and why its absence matters more for some devices than others: metal-cased appliances and anything used in damp areas rely on it; double-insulated tools with two-prong plugs were engineered not to need it.
